Kelakil / Tseada Amba Update July 12, 2008For the past two weeks we went to a community that has some toxin that is slowly destroying them. It is a heartache. I have attached two stories for you to read to help you understand what we are facing. Please pray for us to know how we can help them and that we can soon find a solution. Imperial College London is helping us to find out the problem, so pray also that they would be led aright to find the cause soon before more die.
Masho Guesh’s mother’s story: “It began in April 2007 in our home valley of Tseada Amba. My husband Guesh and I have a farm there; God had given us five children. In April one child Tsega aged eight complained of chest pains, well it started over the liver and then traveled over the right breast and back down again over the liver. He started to vomit green stuff and he felt relief after vomiting and then it would start all over again, he died that April. Then the same problem started with my husband, Guesh (55 years old) and he died in May. Then my little girl Tsegena aged eleven started being sick and six weeks later she died in July 2007. Finally my helper-daughter Letay aged fifteen also became ill and died in September 2007. So I came here (Kelakil) with my two remaining children a boy thirteen and my baby, now 3 years old- Masho. They are both sick and I sometimes have pain”. Masho Guesh the three year old has some ascites already, the other child was not there but was trying alone to farm his father’s farm at Tseada Amba. Gebrehud came on the second visit with very large spleen and slight ascites. Hagos Story Hagos Retebe started with diarrhea in July 2007, then he had fever accompanied by epigastric pain, from then on he has had increasing amounts of ascites which is now ++++ (maximum). In his immediate siblings family no one else has the problem, he alone has the problem. They live near him but are not close neighbors in Tseada Amba. He lived with his wife, his mother in law and four little girls not far from the monastery. His wife is well or at least has no symptoms to date; all the children and his mother in law have gua kua, the mother in law has diarrhea and ascites ++. The illness started in Tseada Amba for the whole family when they moved to Kelakil six months ago. Their neighbors have all died, The Kifle Gebre Mehdin family of seven died, Lelay Sebhat and his family have died. There are reportedly seven families who have died in that vicinity. Read more: |
