Childcare

One little Christmas baby – Yoseph who played the part of Jesus at the Christmas play arrived in Workenish’s house bringing joy to many. The teen girls love all the babies. Two weeks ago five day old Tamrat  (HIV +) arrived loved and cuddled by Mulu who had also recently arrived from Addis Ababa to help along with Senait her assistant. And yesterday little Deborah came abandoned at the bus station. A little darling aged two months, she is being cared for by Wubete and Birky.

Our Sammy has not been well, mental illness difficult to deal with in the west where there are the tools and so much more here where we have so little to work with. We have taken him to a place where it is safer for him because here we have no walls around us and the cliff and lake a constant danger to someone so unstable. We do miss him and we phone often to see how he is managing.

Community children continue to attend school, one lad had disappeared but we managed to find him and he is back attending school. Some of our children have done well in school reports indicate some are within the first three places in class, this is great news!

Health

We have been busy with three clinics in three remotes part of Northwestern Zone in Tigray, it means long treks by four wheel drive vehicles, two to three hours spent seeing patients, providing them with medicines and high protein food so valuable in liver disease. Despite many wise and knowledgeable authorities visiting there is still no firm diagnosis for these poor people. We do know that animals are also affected through illness and death. So not only are the people touched physically but also economically. We pray that soon there will be some findings that will enable us to help these friends.

Several Obstetric Fistula patients have come through the Fistula Waiting Area, one had both a rectal and bladder hole, she was homesick so she has gone home and will return near the time for her surgery. Another needed repeat surgery and was fearful of going home while still wet; she spent her three months interval here with us.

Development

Driving past the Women Headed Household project yesterday, we saw well laid out vegetable patches, with women busily watering their plots, now onto their second crops and quite excited at the potential of making money for their children. The next move is to help them with some great ideas on marketing! The second sites has trees growing and well being dug and the animal fodder has been cut and will be sold for cash thus stimulating the women to keep on the good work commenced so well. We will start several other sites this year for women head householders.

In all this you have helped! Thank you very much!
